DESCRIPTION:As we are approaching March the 8th\, The International Women’s Day\, we invite you to this movie screening where we’ll visualize Nicaraguan women’s fundamental role in revolution and how they have been erased from the narratives.\n\nPlot: “the movie uncovers a watershed moment in history when a group of Nicaraguan women shattered barriers to lead rebel troops in battle and reshape their country with landmark social reforms during 1979’s Sandinista Revolution and the ensuing US-backed Contra War – only to face renewed marginalization by their male peers once the wars ended. Now\, 40 years later\, amid the worst levels of violence against women in Nicaraguan history\, these same women take to the streets to lead the popular movements for equality and democracy once again” (IMDB).\nAfter the movie we want to share and discuss the current situation of women in Nicaragua\, the women’s rights movements\, and what has happened since the current regime took power in 2006 and the protest of April 2018. We’ll discuss how many of the same women who stood in front of the revolution have continued to work for women’s rights in Nicaragua with the result of being cancelled\, incriminated\, forced into exile\, or been held as political prisoners. We’ll also touch upon how especially Nicaraguan women outside of the country seems to engage in activism and resistance.\n\nDuration: 93 minutes\nLanguage: Spanish with English subtitles/ English\nDoors open at 18.00\nWe start watching the movie at 18.30\nThere will be Nicaraguan food at the event and all the earnings will go to the fundraiser for the families of the current and former political prisoners managed by the Nicaragua Network (as we in MAK are part of).\n____\nWe look forward you to joining us for this movie! And of course\, we will make sure to have a lot of popcorn and sodas ready for you!\nThrough monthly film screenings\, Cine & Debate will raise interest and awareness of issues\, different problems and challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean. Cine & Debate creates a community that Danish and International youth in Copenhagen can join.\nWe are a Latin American movie club organized by a group of volunteers in Mellemamerika Komiteen.
