SUMMARY:FIGHTING EXTRACTIVISM IN LATIN AMERICA // Who are the new conquisitors? Who is resisting?
DESCRIPTION:The unfettered pursuit of minerals\, also known as extractivism\, has caused deforestation\, contamination of water\, exploitation of workers\, and not least sickness and tragic early deaths. These activities are hurting people and animals as well as pursuing and exacerbating climate change.\n\nOn Tuesday\, November 8th\, you can meet the two activists\, Carolina de Moura and Danilo Chammas\, who have been working with these issues for more than a decade. They both come from the historical mining region of Minas Gerais in Brazil\, where they have been fighting for justice for the victims of horrible accidents caused by extractivism.\nCarolina and Danilo are coming to Denmark as part of their European tour\, promoting the upcoming release of the documentary The Illusion of Abundance. The film portrays Carolina and two other activists\, their environmental resistance\, and their conviction to hunt down misbehaving transnational corporations. All showing the consequences of globalization and what “development” means in their region.\n\nIn this event Carolina\, who is the impersonation of the aware journalist\, and her partner Danilo\, an award-winning human rights lawyer\, will be laying out the overall structures of extractivism in Latin America\, together with its relations to our behaviours and actions in Europe and present their ways of working. Inequality must be fought in its many forms\, and at Oxfam IBIS we do this by focusing on education\, economic inequality\, social rights\, peacebuilding\, humanitarian aid\, and gender and climate justice.\nTogether we can fight inequality!\n\n– ABOUT MAK –\nThe Central America Committee or in Danish: Mellemamerika Komiteen (MAK) is an NGO-solidarity organization. DESCRIPTION:Cine & Debate is back! \n\nDoors open at 18.00 (The movie starts at 18.15) \n\nThe movie takes place in a poor neighborhood in Nicaragua\, where a young girl\, dreams of becoming a boxer\, but instead is forced to work in a small store. When she falls in love with the middle-class student Ernesto\, she gains an insight into a different world than her own\, but as they spend more time with each other Yuma’s past comes in the way of their relationship and makes life complicated for both.\nThe movie illuminates the everyday difficulties that many people in Central America are facing\, such as gender and class inequality and the almost inevitable gang violence. DESCRIPTION:Vil du med til Costa Rica sommeren 2023? Vil du have en unik rejseoplevelse med fokus kulturudveksling og solidaritet? Ønsker du at tage hjertet med når du rejser?\n\nVi har efter et par års pause gentænkt vores karakteristiske brigader.\n– Det betyder at vi næste år tager hul på en hel ny destination; nemlig Costa Rica!\n– Desuden har vi valgt at flytte turen til skolernes sommerferie for at især studerende har mulighed for at komme med uden nødvendigvis at skulle tage et helt semester fri.\n– Vi får også efter at sende brigadister af sted som allerede har et grundlæggende kendskab til spansk da vi mener dette giver et bedre fundament for oplevelsen og et mere ligeværdigt møde med vores partnere og lokalbefolkningen.\n\nDer er stadig mange detaljer der skal på plads\, så for dette første møde ønsker vi at samle dem der allerede har en spirende interesse for at komme af sted\, snakke forventninger og muligheder.\n\nDer vil være en kort præsentation fra landssekretæren og mulighed for at stille spørgsmål.\n\n***Alle er velkommen til at deltage.
