The movie takes place in a poor neighborhood in Nicaragua, where a young girl, dreams of becoming a boxer, but instead is forced to work in a small store. When she falls in love with the middle-class student Ernesto, she gains an insight into a different world than her own, but as they spend more time with each other Yuma’s past comes in the way of their relationship and makes life complicated for both.
The movie illuminates the everyday difficulties that many people in Central America are facing, such as gender and class inequality and the almost inevitable gang violence. After the movies we’ll discuss the different themes.
